Sometimes referred to as liver specialists, or hepatologists. They are medical professionals with training in the diagnosis, supervision, and treatment of diseases of the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts. Hepatology is typically regarded as a gastrointestinal subspecialty by professionals. However, due to advancements in our knowledge of and ability to treat the liver, it is quickly separating itself from gastroenterology. Hepatologists are generally referred to by doctors for more specialized care. If a patient has just received a diagnosis of a liver problem that necessitates specialized care, a general practitioner or other healthcare provider may refer the patient to a hepatologist. If a doctor is unable to diagnose a patient or they exhibit signs or symptoms that could indicate an underlying liver condition, they might occasionally refer them.
