Endoscopes are used to carry out the POEM operation. The chest or abdomen do not have any incisions. The patient's mouth is used to insert the endoscope, a small, flexible tube, into the esophagus. The lining (mucosa) of the interior of the esophagus is cut with a blade on the end of the scope, and the scope is then inserted into the gap between this mucosal layer and the muscular layers of the esophagus. The POEM method is used to treat achalasia, a disease of swallowing. As a result of an esophageal motility condition called achalasia, the esophagus is unable to function normally in moving food and liquids into the stomach.
